Sunset Homes: a house designed by Bennie M. Gonzales

Admirably suited to the desert, this burnt adobe utilizes a two-pavilion concept to separate the main living and entertaining areas from the sleeping room; joining the two is a long, glass-walled hall.

The thick adobe walls, heavy shake roofs over each pavilion, and ceiling insulation inside all serve to protect the house against desert heat and cold.

The floors throughout the house are of particular interest. They're common brick laid closed-joint on a dry mortar bed over a termite-treated subgrade. The mortar bed was sprinkled with water, the brick was laid, then fine sand and cement were brushed into the joints and the surface was sprinkled. The finished floors were cleaned, sealed, and waxed.
