An undulating site, the severe summer climate, and the owners' desire to combine Southwestern tradition with their own distinctive needs-these were the conditions that made this house.
A four-level plan solved the site problem. Masonry construction is not only traditional, it is sensible as a sun control. There was one sun control conflict: The best view also looked into the setting sun. This was resolved in favor of the view; shutters close off the glass for the brief period when the sun is low in the west.
The cross-shaped plan evolved from separating the house into areas for parents, children, living-dining activities, services. The house was an award winner in an A.I.A.-Sunset Western Home Awards program.
