When asked about the design of this house, the owner-architect replied that he and his wife wanted an informal house with a strong regional quality, built of materials reminiscent of what was used in Arizona in earlier days.
Viewed from a distance, the house appears at first to be a cluster of houses within a walled compound, somewhat suggesting an old hacienda. Still, as these photographs show, there was no attempt to recreate any past Southwest architectural style. Concrete slump block is used for both house and garden walls. Floors inside and exterior walks and patios are of burnt adobe blocks. Interior floors have a rich, almost leatherlike patina achieved by treating the adobe bricks with an oil stain, then sealing and waxing.
