Sunset Homes: a house with an interior court | architect John Tatom

A definite feeling of shelter was created by building this house around a central court and lanai. The court and lanai (see plan) function as a buffer between a living- dining-kitchen wing and a sleeping wing.

The rather massive, almost adobe-like quality of the house, is achieved by using plaster inside and out; the exterior walls have a rough, hand-trowelled finish. Door and window frames are built out 16 inches to give the walls a sculptural sense of depth-actually they're only 2 inches thick.
