Sunset Homes: an award winning house in Hawaii | Architect Thomas O. Wells
This informal house embraces the slope of the hill on its ranch site in Hawaii. Although it is quite appropriate for this setting, it could be equally at home on the right site on the mainland.
It's a small house (1,100 square feet) that uses the large stones-exposed-in-concrete technique. Stone was collected on the site. The need for specialized labor was eliminated with the use of formed masonry rather than laid-up masonry. The wood timbers were precut. The house was an award winner in an A.I.A.-Sunset Western Home Awards program.
