WHILE THE EASTERNER looks like a two-story house, it is an ingenious split-level home, arranged with four different levels to provide the maximum amount of economical floor space.
The plan provides for a covered entrance measuring eight feet by twelve feet which opens into a formal eight-foot by ten-foot foyer-an exceptionally large foyer for a house in any price range. Directly ahead and up three broad steps is a two-story high living room with a beamed ceiling and a seven-section garden window. On one wall there is a huge wood-burning fireplace and two-story atelier window. The adjoining dining room has a French garden door and is overlooked by an elevated balcony with a wrought iron railing and a built-in planter. The dining room, combined with the living room, forms a magnificent expanse 13 feet by 34 feet.
Also accessible from the entrance foyer is the library or second living room which can serve as the television room or den. This room has an eight-foot ceiling as well as picture windows and louver doors.
On the living-dining room level is a work-saving kitchen. It has accessible cabinets and counters on both sides, its own breakfast space and a corner picture window. The laundry is located next to the kitchen and near the outside door. It has a washtub unit, broom closet, and space for clothes washer, dryer and freezer.
Stairs from the living area extend to the bedroom level, which is at the front of the house. It includes a large master bedroom with its own dressing room with two sliding door closets and its private bathroom with a glass-installed shower. There are two additional good-sized bedrooms, each with large closets, and a family bathroom featuring twin vanities, two double-sized four-foot sliding-door mirror medicine cabinets and other equipment.
The exterior features a pleasing com- bination of brick and horizontal siding. In order to provide more living space on the lower level, the architect has moved the garage forward so that it extends partly in and partly out of the house area. It will accommodate two large cars, and has a door at its rear leading to the house proper. You can get in and out of your car without exposing yourself to the weather.
A basement extends along the entire rear half of the house, under the living and dining room and easily accessible from the central hall. This section can be used to provide an additional 675 square feet of living area-more than enough for a recre- ation room, hobby area and workshop.
One feature which has made this house popular with builders is that it encourages a gentle slope of your lot toward the street. The living room level in the rear is higher than the entrance level, and therefore your soil can be high in the rear but lower in front.
