THE FEELING OF SPACIOUSNESS is achieved through the use of partitions, sloping ceilings and a number of exterior views in the contemporary parade home at 5154 Jackwood.
Built by Earl Gilbert and designed by architect Thompson McCleary, this home has a living area planned as one general space with seven-foot high partitions separating the living room, dining area, family room and kitchen. Two outdoor areas open off the living section, one in the front of the house and one in the back. The front terrace is made private through a redwood fence and is entered through glass sliding doors in the living room. The back terrace is enclosed by a covered walkway to the garage on one side and an extension of the bedroom wing on the other.
Ceilings in the living area slopes with the roof, further enhancing the feeling of spaciousness. Exterior is of redwood vertical boards with natural fininsh. The entrance is recessed and is topped by a cutout section of the roof to allow light and sun for planting purposes. The entrance way leads to the living area on the left, the bedroom wing on the right, and the family room straight ahead. The living room has a fireplace and is partially paneled.
The kitchen is equipped with built-in oven and range, refrigerator and deep freeze, dishwasher and disposer. It has a bar to service the family room and also opens at the back to a covered walkway and service room which leads to the two-car garage.
The three bedrooms have horizontal sliding windows which maintain privacy yet bring the outside inside. The master bedroom has its own complete bath and an entrance to the back terrace.
Builder Gilbert, a native of Houston and a graduate of the University of Houston, has been building homes since 1945 when he returned from the service.
He has built in Afton Oaks and Camelot Woods, and developed North Park and Greenwood Village.
