A GRACIOUS EARLY AMERICAN ranch type home with an exterior of redwood and cedar shakes with brick trim is on parade at 5155 Jackwood. Built by S. E. McCrory and J. G. Baldwin of McBal Construction Co., it was designed by architects Dunaway and Jones.

The courtyard porch covers the main entry way and also the driveway to the double garage. The entrance foyer has a brick wall with ranch plank flooring.

The living room and family room flow together, joined by a beam ceiling. The family room opens onto a large enclosed patio which can be used as an outdoor family room. It is landscaped and made private by means of a brick wall on one side and redwood fence on the other.

The kitchen has a Westinghouse built-in oven and range, a combination built-in refrigerator and deep freeze, one on top of the other, an automatic washer and dryer, dishwasher and disposer.

The bedroom wing of the home is completely private. The master bedroom has large windows overlooking the patio and its own bath. The outer bath lies directly off the hall and can be used as a guest bathroom. The middle room is paneled in birch and the front bedroom has large windows and double closets.

Builders McCrory and Baldwin have been in the lumber and building business in Houston for the past 12 years. They operate the Turley Lumber Co. as well as the McBal Construction Company. Construction of their parade home was directed by F. L. Woods, Jr.

THE CONSTRUCTION STORY of home building is illustrated in the parade home at 8714 Pritchett. This contemporary model has exposed interior sections to show visitors the materials and construction methods that go into home building.

"Cut-a-way" features shown include the foundation slab and levels, air-conditioning ducts, ceiling insulation and construction, wall composition, wiring, plumbing, and other interesting phases of building.

The exterior is of brick and V-joint wood siding. It is a contemporary design by Duane Myers and Associates. The home is built around the terrace and family room, located at the center. Special feature of design includes two outdoor areas, one opening off the family room to be used as an adult outdoor entertaining section, and another behind the garage to double as a children's play area and utility yard.

Accentuating the exterior is a sloping roof section with window gables and a brick planter forming a patio entry way. The entrance has a brick wall to the family room, serving to separate the dining area, living room and family room. To the left of the entrance is the living room which has glass sliding doors onto the adult terrace and high strip windows overlooking the front of the house. To the right of the entrance way is the dining area, which opens onto the kitchen at the front of the house.

The kitchen is equipped with Westinghouse built-ins and has a folding wall which can separate it completely from the dining area.

The bedroom wing opens from the family room and is spread across the back of the house. The master bedroom has glass sliding doors onto the adult terrace and a complete master bath. All three bedrooms have much window exposure and the children's bedrooms open onto the outdoor play area, so that youngsters need not travel through other parts of the house.

The two-car garage opens into a laundry room equipped with Westinghouse washer and dryer. The home is air-conditioned with a General Electric unit.

ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING new homes in the Parade is the flat top, structural steel house at 5146 Jackwood.

Built by W. K. "Buck" King and designed by Burdette Keeland, it expounds a new concept of home design and living. Parade visitors will probably find the most unusual feature of the house is its exposed steel beams. Structure is expressed throughout the house following the idea that modern architecture should not falsify structure by covering it with brick or wood or any other material. The exterior is of brick and steel columns painted white.

The floor plan includes a living room, family room and kitchen, three bedrooms, two baths, storage room, two-car garage and large patio.

The entire home is built around the patio. The plan is U-shaped with the patio in the center and all areas of the house opening onto it. The entry way leads into the patio, which is covered with a steel lattice. This lattice work serves to break the line of the flat top roof as well as to make an attractive covering for the patio.

The exterior walls of the bedrooms are almost completely glass with the master bedroom having floor to ceiling glass with sliding doors.

The family room and kitchen are separated by a kitchen work unit counter. This counter is a 9 1/2-foot expanse at convenient working level and is equipped with complete General Electric built-ins, including dishwasher, range and oven, disposer, automatic washer and dryer. It is the city's first GE installation of this type.

Walls throughout the house are of brick, glass and asbestos. The home is completely fireproof.

It is furnished in modern style by Knoll Associates of New York.

Builder King has lived in Houston since 1938. He attended Rice Institute and entered the home building industry in 1946. He is the son of Houston's well known builder C. E. King.

THE WARMTH AND FAMILIARITY of family living is the dominant feature of the parade home at 5150 Jackwood. It has an attractive early American exterior of brick and pre-stained cedar boards and batts and an interior planned primarily for comfortable, informal living. The kitchen and family room form one large open area, separated by a serving bar and fireplace.

Architects Brodnax and Sawyer and builder Earl Gilbert believe this floor plan meets the demands of today's buyers. The home has such modern features as indoor-outdoor living areas, built-in kitchen appliances, cypress paneling, brick planters, etc. One of the most unique features is the bathroom planning. Both baths are compartmented so they can be used by three people in complete privacy.

The exterior is highlighted by a curving brick planter that encloses the front patio. A veranda with Mexican tile flooring stretches across the entrance.

The family room is paneled and has a beam ceiling, and fireplace with paneled hearth. The kitchen has a wood burning barbecue grill and is equipped with electric built-ins.

The master bedroom has a dormer window overlooking the front of the house and its own master bath. All bedrooms have large closets with sliding doors and built-in storage drawers.

THIS SOUTHERN PLANTATION colonial design is by Architect Lucian Hood, and built by the Pabst Corporation at 5147 Jackwood.

The exterior is old pink brick with a front porch offset by six white columns. Perfect balance is achieved by a bay window on each side of the porch and double entry doors with two floor length windows on each side.

The modified L-shape floor plan has a large entry hall, dining room and living room, den, patio, kitchen, master bedroom, guest bedroom and a third bedroom to be used as a study, breezeway and two-car garage.

Called the "General Electric House," it has GE air-conditioning and in the kitchen, GE wall refrigerator and deep freeze, oven and range top with barbecue pit, automatic washer and dryer, dishwasher and disposer-all colored in yellow.

The kitchen and den are both paneled, with beamed ceilings. The master bedroom opens onto the patio and also to the covered breezeway to the garage.

The home is furnished by Christmas Furniture Company in early American with a few formal pieces.

J. Pabst, owner of Pabst Corporation, builders of Blue Ribbon Homes, is a native of Galveston and came to Houston after World War II. He is a partner in the lumber and building business with his wife, the former Betty Twist, and Houstonian Wilbur Moore.
