A simple house for a young family from Kirkland, Washington

Cool, shaded patio is fine for youngsters' wheeled toys or grownups' relaxation. Doors into house join this area with living room, family room. Uninterrupted gable roof makes carport seem like a part of house. It provides shelter for unloading car at the front door. Entry uses carport as a covered court. Front door opens to hall that leads directly to living-family rooms, kitchen and any of the four bedrooms.

Corridor kitchen has everything along two walls - this wall backs up to the living-room fireplace. There's space in corner of kitchen for informal meals. More elaborate ones are set to right - out of sight of food preparation. Skylight is "window in roof" for this inside work area.

Exposed-beam ceiling of cedar planking carries completely across formal and informal areas of living wing. Here, in family room, expansive feeling is gained by extension of roof through wall of glass. This shade glass and offers shelter from the Northwest's sudden showers.
