A couple of interior design ideas from february 1957 by the designers from Better Homes and Gardens
Focal point here is handsome lighting fixture that heightens interst as it lowers ceiling. You might center interest in a magnificent table, charming old tapestry, massive antique mirror. Light-green stain on walls enhances contrast with copper. Clever cofee table is heavy glass slab on trio of teak tables.
Radiant dining room gets special glow by combining mellow gold with wood. To enhance effect of stage setting created by raised platform, circular, gold area rug sets off dining area. Glass wall and fishnet curtains let sun pour in. Blue cushions add cool contrast.
Nothing is quite so effective as white in achieving the simplicity that keynotes the contemporary look. If you begin with a backround of white, you'll get a feeling of spaciousness and be able to use colors as brilliant as you like. White fireplace and floor here permit striking turquoise wall and sofa, chiar and hearth seat of gold, jewel-toned cushions. Raised marble hearth emphasizes the curve fireplace, shows sharp effect of black on white. In addition to providing background, white is choice for coffe table, trim treatment of long windows.
Variety of textures combined around room add more than surface interest. Rayon chair fabric achieves surprisingly soft blend of sharp oranges and pinks, handwoven blind repeats colors. Brick wall is imaginative addition to the assorted textures, ideal backdrop for white lampshade and wide-matted prints. Room is good example of how serenely old and new lines, styles and colors can live together in a comparatively small area.
Bold colors and lines of contemporary painting inspired decorating scheme of entire room. So colors could be used freely against flattering backgrounds, floors, walls and ceilings were kept white - sofas covered in neutral gray. Daring orange rug dominates room, is sharply accented by black desk, chair and bench. Bright bindings of books stand out against black bookcase. Table's similarity to painting makes it inspired accessory choice.
Basic note here is blue, appropriately cool against warmth of gumwood paneling. Shade was established by the printed wallpaper, matched in carpet and paint. Powerful effect of wood makes it possible to use the blue generously. Blend of blue and wood is not just descriptive: paint is actually rubbed into paneling. Mulberry accents are few and flattering, large enough not to be overwhelmed by their surroundings. Painting above fireplace is appropriately large - gilded frames of two small maps on staircase wall add warm metal touches.
