The owners specifically desired a house with a large living room, open views of a wooded canyon, a separate dining room, glassed porch area that could be opened in the summer, a separate studio, the bedrooms upstairs. Above all, they did not want the trees disturbed.
To make the house look as if it had always been a part of the heavily wooded site, the plans called for resawn redwood to be used throughout, plus cedar shingle siding, plus large expanses of glass. A generous engawa extends the living area on this sloping site.
