Fawcett Homes: The Brookdale | Architect: Rudolph Matern

ATTICS DESIGNED to be lived in have been part of the American scene since the first settlers. In fact, the Cape Cod house with its second floor for sleeping is an American tradition. Architects have never been able to devise a suitable sub- stitute for the low-cost space you can get on a second story.

The Brookdale recognizes the attic's expansion potentialities. It's a big house with three bedrooms and two back-to-back bathrooms on the first floor, an attached two-car garage and a full basement. But its full potential is exploited only when two exceptional bedrooms with their own lavish closet space and bathroom are added.

The living room measures 21 feet by 17 feet. A log-burning fireplace is located on the car wall. The kitchen has a U-shape preparation center which saves steps.
