That moment when June Lockhart and John Lindsay used to drive a fire truck they bought from Desilu Studios | TV Guide 1965-04-24 Northern California

The fire engine above is owned—lock, stock and fire hose—by actress June Lockhart and her architect-husband John Lindsay. They acquired it for $1500 from a man at Desilu Studios, where June and the fire engine both worked in Lassie. The vehicle carries $900 worth of shiny brass on her flashy exterior (the brass nozzles help decorate the Lindsay library between spins), has power steering (an innovation of the Lindsays), and 24 spark plugs for her six-cylinder engine. And that's an awful lot of spark plugs. "We call her Cordelia Delilah Lindsay," says June, "and she's a 1923 Seagraves, made in Columbus, Ohio. She holds 42 gallons of gasoline and gets about 100 yards to the gallon. The trading stamps we get when we buy gas —I could wear them like a boa!" Since the day June cut a wide swath across the corner of a neighborhood lawn, her husband has forbidden her to drive on crowded boulevards and narrow streets, but she's a good copilot.

One day the Lindsays stalled on a busy boulevard and June was elected to call the towing service.

"I said my fire engine was stalled. There was this long pause. Then the on the phone asked, 'Is it red, madam?' I said, 'Of course it's red.' Then another long pause, and he said, 'I'll send a tow truck.' Well, this tow truck arrived and the man casually wrapped the chains around Cordelia and started out. Only thing, he left the tow truck's rear end attached to Cordelia. We have finally located a place that can handle Cordelia in the manner to which she is accustomed." June paid a modest $9 00 for Cordelia's registration, and on the line in the form calling for "model type," she wrote simply: "Fire."
