"The Club Inc" - an iconic location in Birmingham, Alabama

The Club Inc. is situated high atop Red Mountain, overlooking the delightfully jeweled Birmingham skyline. This site affords a breathtaking view of a busy city, with its multitude of bright lights and the mighty and ever-colorful blast furnaces of the steel industry.

In 1947, Robert S. Smith from Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company, hired the young and talented architect John Davis to build a unique private club atop Red Mountain. Davis envisioned a contemporary design of cantilevered roofs, white stucco walls, and parabolic forms, while the interior design and furniture bared the signature of Georgia Schmidt. The window shades were woven by Dorothy Liebert. The club opened in 1951 and was expanded in 1957, 1966, 1978 and 1985 and still stands today.
