The John H. Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile, Alabama was built in sections and floated to the proper positions, then sunk, and the sections were joined underwater. It was completed in 1940. The entrances and the toll-booth were designed in an elegant art deco style. The tunnel was designed by Oliver Fowlkes and construction directed by Wayne Palmer of Mobile.
In 1977 it shows up in Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and in 1991 in "Stone Cold".

The Club Inc. is situated high atop Red Mountain, overlooking the delightfully jeweled Birmingham skyline. This site affords a breathtaking view of a busy city, with its multitude of bright lights and the mighty and ever-colorful blast furnaces of the steel industry.
In 1947, Robert S. Smith from Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company, hired the young and talented architect John Davis to build a unique private club atop Red Mountain. Davis envisioned a contemporary design of cantilevered roofs, white stucco walls, and parabolic forms, while the interior design and furniture bared the signature of Georgia Schmidt. The window shades were woven by Dorothy Liebert. The club opened in 1951 and was expanded in 1957, 1966, 1978 and 1985 and still stands today.
