Here's an easy-to-expand rectangular plan that encloses space needed for a family of four. The roof rests entirely on exterior walls and center beam so inside walls can be placed where they're needed and left partially open where desired. Interior can be partitioned to fit family's needs, then changed as family grows. Outside, house gains individuality with cedar shingles an old Traditional favorite used in trim, Contemporary fashion.
Distinctive "ship's prow" gable adds interest to the pleasantly simple lines. Plan can be expanded with a bedroom and bath off end (left), carport doubled in size to house second car and provide storage space, and family room enlarged at the rear.
