1955 - Detroit gets a new super interchange

As the nation's growing network of superhighways sent out superb new tentacles in the East last week, Detroit, the birthplace of all U.S. traffic jams, completed a dazzling "directional expressway interchange to speed local traffic. Situated at the intersection of two six-lane expressways in a residential area three miles from the main business district, the auto capital's new $7 million supercrossroads is of unique design.

With 14 bridges and ramp structures the Detroit interchange eliminates the looping cloverleaf-type intersection. Approaching from any of the four directions , the motorist can turn in the actual direction he wishes to go, traveling at an allowable speed of 40 mph in long arcs that pass above or below the cross lanes. Or he can whiz straight through at 55 mph.
