With port facilities dwarfed in the background, this photograph of the Hughes flying boat dramatically frames its massive proportions. With a successful first flight in 1947, it was estimated that the 400,000-lb. plywood giant will carry more than 500 people, or a total payload of some 70 tons. Its eight engines develop 24,000 hp.
