1953 kids beach fashion

In 1953, there were 36 million kids, under 10 years, in America, a huge market for toy manufacturers and fashion designers. 

For them the designers created beach clothes using primary colors and pastels. 

Sailcloth boxer shorts with crew hats that repeat the primary colors of stripes. Shorts were $1.76 and hats were $1.39, both by Tam O'Shanter.


Glamour girl wears a handwoven, fronged poncho from Argentina which makes a fine cover for dripping bathing suits. It was imported by Burdine's Miami, The cost was $11.

Sophisticate shows ensemble look popular in new children's wear. Thsi has a low-waisted line seen in adult styles, comes in crease-resistant cotton ($5, Youngland).




West Indies is a source of design by Monica Scott of Barbados for Bonwit Teller, New York. In denim resembling madras, the pedal pushers are $4 and top is $2.50.


Pimento tunic and striped shorts are in denim and have special construction and fasteners that enable even a 3-year-old to get dressed by herself. (Joseph Love, $4).


Footprints for a young lady who has been making her own tracks in the sand decorate this hooded terry cloth beach or bath robe (Geisha, $3). By loosening the drawstick neck it can be flattened out to use as a beach towel.
