An unusual 1965 vacation retreat in the mountains

This home is a distinctive mountain hideout. Blending the best features of the tested A-frame design, this home boasts thede advantages: sloping walls and roof to shed heavy snow loads; glass end panels for ample light and a wall-to-wall view; compact, uncomplicated construction.

The excellent design starts with the floating deck jutting over the hill; the side walls angle upward to the sloped roof crown, shielding the glass end walls fromw eather. Simple materials, like red-cedar shingles and spruce decking, create a rugged look- and reduce exterior upkeep.

This plan works for company-filled weekends: upstairs there are three bedrooms (one with three bunk-beds) and a shower bath. The main bath downstairs opens to a rear-deck entry which serves as a mud room.

Built-in sofa, recessed fireplace and carpeted pit give the spacious living room and inviting look.

The compact dining area takes full advantage of ceiling-high glass.
