An exotic house from 1958 Fort Lauderdale

A departure from familiar Florida flat-top, this low, sweeping roof breaks slightly to form gable over entry. Windows over center garage are to main floor "attic" (yellow on plan). Planting shields bedroom area (left), fence screens patio. Five angled partitions form attractive privacy screen for patio. Cutouts in overhang maintain light, airy look of house while offering choice of sun or shade to people below. Rough texture coral is used for retaining wall, also wall of house beyond the entrance door. Architect is John M. Evans, A.I.A.

Living area feels cool, remote, although near a well-traveled street and hot Florida sun. It's achieved by soft colors of carpet, draperies. Also the well-shaded windows which face a smooth, blue seascape.

Outside-inside change is gradual, well planned. With kitchen near, family can enjoy leisurely breakfast on table in this handsome screened entry court. Translucent plastic skylight has seashells tossed on top. Planter on far wall has idea for any indoor garden: espaliered sea-grape fastened to the cypress panels.
