An elegant two stories house from 1960

This 1960 house is a modern reinterpretation of a traditional home. While it has two stories it's only 2.300 sq. ft.

Traditional furnishings, with a few restrained contemporary pieces, go well in a room that's built for plenty of family activity. Natural-finish materials and simple lines are the key here (note the single-plank mantel and the exposed ceiling deck and beams). Overhead lighting is built into the lowered, dry wall section  of the ceiling. The two steps leading up to the living room give that area a secluded , more formal air.

Living room, at the front of the house, is used as an old-fashioned sitting room. It's away from traffic and gets lots of daylight from four double windows (one shown here). At night, the two-way fireplace brightens both this room and the family room beyond.

Large windows at the rear of this home open up it up to a very pleasant garden view. White trim and hardboard panels add a dash of contrast to the adjoining walls of used brick. At right is a former screened porch which the owners enclosed for all-year use. The door provides access from the yard to both house and garage beyond.
