A lakeside splitlevel from Stillwater, Minnesota. Bonus: it has a "little theater"

The James Jensons of Stillwater, Minnesota, designed their house with a special function - the family room has a theater stage.

House stretches to two roomy levels, as lot slopes away from street. This pleasant, private view earns lots of glass. Playtime's easy to oversee from kitchen windows, next to screened porch. Projecting, plastic-roofed porch seems suspended outside living-dining areas. It forms a shady shelter for terrace below. Children scamper to and from playroom through their colorful orange door - leaving the upstairs undisturbed.

In the kitchen, open-air feeling results from exposed-beam ceiling, cabinets that stop at head height and large windwos overlooking play yard and view. At the same tiem kitchen is separated from living-dining areas.

There are no apths through the living room so it's easy to keep it neat and clean. Paneled fireplace wall assures privacy for streetside; head-high glass at end of room ltes light stream in across attractive ceiling beams. Long cabinet makes end wall seem broader, adds storafe often overlooked in living area.

The loer-level playroom is actually a "little theater" for children adn friends. Raised platform opens to largest of three junior bedrooms. The kids have both stage and backstage.
