Property of Dr. and Mrs. Pelletier H. Supple, Oceanside, California | Architect: Robert F. Gordon

Dr. and Mrs. Pelletier Supple and their two children, Alex, eighteen, and Caron, twenty, sail every weekend all summer long at Oceanside, Calif., and every year enter their catamaran in the local regattas, and sometimes win a trophy. When they are not sailing, they are swimming, surfing, or entertaining at coffee, cocktails, lunch, dinner - "It all depends on what time of day our friends drop by."

The center for these pastimes is a sand-white beach-house, a concrete-block, two-story answer to the ticklish problem always presented by a narrow lot. Designed by architect Robert F. Gordon, the house looks not at all like its seaside neighbors, but more like a contemporary townhouse with 30 feet of sand and seashells for a front garden. Because of the possibility of future neighbors only a few feet away, the windows with special glass, polarized and tinted to deflect glare, are at the front of the house where the only neighbor is the ocean.
