Property of Mr. and Mrs. Donald H. Miller Jr., Chappaqua, New York | architect: Edward Larrabee Barnes
Architectural style was no problem to Mr. and Mrs. Donald H. Miller, Jr., for whom this house was built in Chappaqua, N. Y., since they were convinced that only a contemporary house could meet their particular needs and interests. The Millers wanted one that would keep pace with modern living. They wanted flexible space for entertaining, plenty of room for music and books, separate quarters for four children ranging in age from 8 to 16, and a feeling of close contact with the outdoors. In the Millers' case, it was the site that influenced the design of the house. They and their architect had fallen in love with a 5 1/2-acre property which overlooked a sloping wooded hillside and a small lake. Immediately they had envisioned a house that would be an integral part of the landscape as Japanese houses are. The supremely livable result is a house completely at one with the land.
