This house, designed by Halina Rosenthal for herself and her husband, Bernard J. Rosenthal, shows you how to plan for expansion. The idea: floors and rafters are continued outside the basic three-room construction to form the framework for two future rooms, a sheltered garden room and a second bedroom. Stretching between the Pacific Ocean and the mountains in Malibu, California, the house takes full advantage of the splendid two-way view. Mr. Rosenthal's own bronze sculpture adds a striking note of contrast to the geometric framework of the house. The studio where they work is a separate building near the house.
