In just a little over 1,000 square feet of space, the architects fitted together a trim box of a house, with room for a beginning family and a minimum strain on the budget. It is stepped into a steep hill, 4 feet below grade on the uphill side, 4 feet above on the downhill side.
The house was kept simple enough so that the owner could do the carpentry himself. The steep grade of the slope allowed for building the carport at street level and for sheltering a terrace under it.
