Sunset Homes: three level living by architect Robert W. Hayes

For three years this house stood on its hillside site in Sausalito, California, as a partly framed structure. It was planned as a much larger house, but construction was halted by legal action. over housing density and access to the street when only one wing and part of a second had been framed.

The architect bought the skeleton, and without changing much of the basic structure, designed this three-bedroom, two-bath house for his family.

The major change from the original plan was to locate the living areas on the upper floor, where there is a good view of San Francisco Bay over rooftops and trees. Because the upper level is small, a small deck off the dining room and another around two sides of the living room were designed to make the rooms seem larger. The decks provide close-at-hand outdoor living space up where there's more sun.
