Property of Mr. David Mellinkoff | Architect Ronald White | Photographer Julius Shulman
When young David Mellinkoff returned from active duty overseas, his one dream, after getting a car, was to build a house that would naturally grow with his needs. Together with Ronald White, a designer friend, such a house was planned. The house they built consists of only one room, a very large room, small kitchen, and bath. But, and this is a very large BUT, every part of the house can grow logically. The modest kitchenette will increase in size by the removal of a very short wall, while the bath may be opened easily to service porch and maid's room. At the fireplace end of the living room, a large sheet of glass was placed in an opening designed to give access later to a hall which will lead to the new bedrooms. Acting as a dramatic entrance detail is the heavy overhanging eave, sheltering the slanted, fixed-glass window. Chartreuse used on its underside adds life. and relieves the darkness of the redwood which has been used as both exterior and interior finish. Inside, a rounded counter can be used as buffet table and is a fine spot for quick meals.
