The unique case of the "Oasis network" along the Illinois Tollway

In 1959, with the construction of the Illinois Tollway, the public authorities leased 5 areas along the freeway to a joint venture between AMOCO ( American Oil Company) and the Fred Harvey Restaurants. What made them unique was the location, the Oasis being built above the road.

A 6th one (Lincoln) was built in 1968 - an all-steel building bearing the signature of architect David Haid. A7th one (DeKalb) and the only one not built above the road, opened in 1975. During the 1970s, the beloved chain Howard Johnson took over the restaurants.
