Colonial Plaza Mall, Orlando, opened on January 31, 1956 as Florida's largest shopping center. It was designed by architect Morris Lapidus and built by R. M. Thompson Co. of Clearwater. The most iconic part of it was the space-age designed Publix Market - the largest supermarket in central Florida. The second anchor was an A&P. It also featured a Belk's a Jordan Marsh and a Ronnies. The interior was air-conditioned, and it had over 2,000 parking spaces.
