The time-honored popularity of the New England style house is legendary. And the reasons for its favored position are many its history is a distinct part of our heritage, it has the familiar feeling of the homes we grew up in, and its materials and floor plan attest to its economical and practical appeal. Yet in this Five Star home, Architect James Schnur provides a fresh addition to this proved design by including a family room. Located in an activity-working core with kitchen and utility room, it becomes a useful part of the home. A breezeway links the living area to outdoors, and a central hall gives good traffic sense to total plan.
Behind house is a neat terrace of random-size concrete slabs. Tucked in space between garage and house, it's sheltered by the breezeway-porch. Near-by kitchen is handy for snacks outdoors.
With family room to take brunt of living and small gatherings, living room is spared for formal entertaining. Bay window be-comes commanding feature of room and gives relief to wall line.
Fireplace, focal point of family room, is angled to guide traffic to kitchen. It shares the same pillar of brick as the fireplace in living room, but has a separate flue. Raised hearth is slate.
Space between kitchen counter and cabinets serves as pass-through or buffet for family room. Couch across room doubles as an extra sleeping space for overnight guests.
