The fantastic Bell X-1 rocket-planes

The NASA-Bell  XS-1, later renamed X-1 was a rocket engine–powered aircraft, part of a 1944 supersonic research project. It was built two years later in 1946. In 1954, a Bell X-1A, piloted by legendary Chuck Yeager exceeded 1,600 miles per hour (2,600 km/h; 1,400 kn).

Bell X-1A and X-1B.

The X1-B was designed as a flying laboratory for high altitude, high speed research. Although equipped with wheels for landing, the X1-B was launched in mod-air from a mother plane to conserve fuel for actual flight.

The Bell X-1E was shown in my favorite TV series - I Dream of Jeannie.

Four were made X1-A, B, D and E, while C remained only as a mock-up. 3 are on display in: National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC;  National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC;  NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center headquarters building at Edwards Air Force Base, California.
