The McDonnell XF-85 Goblin is one of the first unusual flying machines created during the cold war. The plane was supposed to be carried in the bomb bay of a Convair B-36 and would've been deployed in case the bomber was attacked by enemy interceptors. So basically it had the role of defending the bomber.
There were only two prototypes made, the first flight was on 23 August 1948. The project was canceled in 1949.
Both are now on display, one at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio; and the other at the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland, Nebraska.
