Carousel, the second of the Rodgers-Hammerstein gold mine of Broadway classics to be made into a film (the first was Oklahoma), is about to bust out all over, like June. Made by 20th Century-Fox and shot to a great extent on location in Maine, Carousel is the first release in their new 55-mm CinemaScope process, which produces a sharper screen image than the usual 35-mm film. But more noteworthy than the new process is Carousel's 21-year-old leading lady, Shirley Jones , who with co-star Gordon MacRae came straight from Oklahoma! Shirley, who plays an appealing Julie Jordan, is a show business phenomenon. In 1953, completely unknown, she was signed by Rodgers and Hammerstein after a singing audition, put into two bit parts. Given the lead in movie Oklahoma!, she was hired for Carousel before Oklahoma! came out and found herself thrown into the leads of $10 million worth of movies before one paying moviegoer heard her sing a note.
