Adding pairs of jets in a "pod" beneath each outer wing panel of the B-36 gives the world's largest bomber a record total of 40,000 horsepower. They supplement six 3500-horsepower piston engines for added power on take-off and extra speed over the target area. Using them the giant plane has taken off at a gross weight of 280,000 pounds in 3500 feet of runway and reached a 40,000-foot altitude.
