The strutting penguins of the Antarctic, seldom bothered by anybody on their comfortless continent, were given a taste of what was ins tore for them recently when they were visited by the Navy's icebreaker U.S.S. Atka. The ship came as a prelude to the first systematic exploration of Antarctica, planned as part of the International Geophysical Year beginning in 1957, when terrestrial and meteorological measurements will be made simultaneously all over the earth, including South Pole. Discovering that shifting ice damaged Little America, the Atka steamed 5,500 miles, half around the frozen continent, searching for suitable bases for the coming expedition. Then the Atka headed north after hustling 11 of its penguin hosts on board for a trip to the U.S.
