In december 1954 was the opening of the $2 1/2 million Coliseum which for some events could seat 9,000 (with another 1,000 standees). Spokane almost did not get its Coliseum. First proposed in 1925, the project was defeated at the polls that year and later in 1931, 1947 and 1948. Local boosters were afraid that if another bond issue failed the subject could never be raised again. Then in 1952, a new committee took over, persuaded Spokane businessmen ti back a big promotion campaign and got the bond issue approved that November. With land donated and contractors working for unprecedentedly low rates, the city built a combination sports arena, concert hall, convention center, art gallery and town meeting place.
Sadly the structure was demolished in the 90s.
