Douglas X-3 - the flying test tube

The Douglas X-3 was an experimental jet plane designed for testing, it was the first to use titanium in major airframe components.

Image below (1953): Flying test tube, the X-3 built by Douglas, comes in for hot landing at Edwards Air Force Base, California. As long as a transport, weighing 13 tons, with only 22 feet of wingspan, it was built to study the strains of supersonic flight. Within its needlelike nose it carries 1.200 pounds of test instruments.
