1953 - Thule Air Base becomes functional

After one year and a half, in 1953, up near the world's top, 6 miles down of Greenland and 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Thule (pronounced "Tooley") Air Base became functional. The base is set in a barren valley on the vas Danish Island, five hours away by jet bomber from Russian industrial centers. Everything is frozen. For nine months the only road in is the skies. From a 32.000-pound snowscraper, haviest item ever airlifted, to lipstick for the three females (nurses), all must be flown in. The 3.000 airmen live with their runway, built to take the mightiest bombers, their warehouses, bulging with thousands of spare plane parts, and their bowling alleys, soda fountains and Turkish bath.
