In 1875, on the northeast corner of 12th Street N.W., and Pennsylvania Avenue, the Shepherd Centennial Building, a seven-story office building in the Second Empire style was built. It opened next year (1876). In 1893 was converted into the Raleigh hotel. The building was demolished in 1911 to make space for the new Raleigh hotel which was opened in 1913, a 13-story Beaux Arts structure. The building was demolished in 1964.
