1953. The $14 million Empress of Canada had been tied up at the docks of Liverpool for her yearly overhaul when the fire broke out. Before firemen could quench it, she was ablaze from bow to stern. Hundreds of tons of water pumped into the burning ship had no effect on the fire. Instead the Empress began to list with the weight of the water, then ponderously heaved over against the dock and half sank in 50 feet water. Still burning inside, the liner was a total loss.
