In 1952 The Lefferts Color Wall Company brought colors to the car tires

To the largest catalog of automobile "extras" a Long Island firm recently has added tires with sidewalls in five colors. The Lefferts Color Wall Company  envisions the day when red, green, blue, yellow or chartreuse tires will be as much a part of the well-appointed sedan as fenders and chromium. These high hopes are based on the rapidly increasing number of pastel and two- and three-toned cars on the road. "Black is on the way out", says Lefferts partner Steve Usack flatly. Usack's firm buys the premium quality tires of a well-known maker, then vulcanizes strips of colored rubber on the sidewalls. The bright result costs approximately the same as the traditional whitewalls. Distribution is so far limited to New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore, but expansion plans are under way and Lefferts hopes that its current output of 250 tires a day (yellow is the most popular) will soon be insufficient to meet demand.
