A beautiful house in the woods, designed by architect Henry Norris

This beautiful house in the woods was designed by architect Henry Norris. It is a rare instance of brick and stone working together for a unified appearance. Don't try to combine different materials unless the colors blend as smoothly as these browns and tans - and use a complementary roof color.

Tall windows on the garage make the front seem more open than it really iis; actually there's no direct view of the street except from recessed entry.

The interior of the garage is finished with gypsum board and beamed ceiling, so you can use it for outdoor parties.

Living and sleeping areas are buffered by the absement stairs, amster bath, closets and a short hallway. The ebdrooms are clustered together, yet none of them shares a wall with another or with the living room - so no one in your family will loose sleep over a late bridge game or the Saturday morning cartoons.

The kitchen is handy to the garage and side entrance, an asset when you're toting grocery bags or garbage.

Overall dimensions are 68x36 feet; total floor space is 2.250 square feet, excluding the garage and decks.

In the rear, redwood board-and-batten siding and decking were stained wood harmonize with the brick and stone both out front and inside.

The unusual angled deck provides a lot of usable space in just a few square feet. There's another, more conventionally shaped deck adjacent to the dining room.

Slate, brick, cove lighting and natural wood provide warmth and texture in this airy living room.

Furniture was grouped naturally around the fireplace, leaving plenty of space for traffic and a piano or entertainment center in the corner at far left.

This is the only cathedral ceiling in the house. The ridge beam actually helps support the roof; the others are false.

Recessed "skylights" - which are actually fluorescent fixtures and translucent glass - plus a window wall that looks out on the entry make the kitchen-eating area seem bigger.

A bar-high surface screens all the counter clutter and you can serve from it in the mornings when the alarms doesn't go off. There's a pantry and broom closet behind louvered doors in the background; on their left is the dining room.
