A 2.084-square-foot house with a magnificent fireplace

In front of this lovely 1966 home there are no gapings sheets of glass that must be draped for privacy from passersby. In fact, only one window faces the street; others look out on the entry court. But the house doesn't appear austere or barn-like  because of the open court, gables, widely spaces battens and several vert interesting materials. The maintenance-free siding, for example, is plywood covered with crushed granite. The entry fence is plywood too, embelish with standard moldings.

Almost the entire rear wall opens up with sliding glass doors. Instead of settling for a long, featureless slab, we provide individual patios for the master bedroom, living room and family-dining room, then separated them with landscaping.

Guests approach the entry through this dramatic promenade. Gates left and right can be shut for privacy or to form an enclosed play area. The double entry door eliminate traffic jams.

This soaring, open cathedral ceiling is not a costly decorating stunt - it's an engineering feature that provides more value and beauty for your construction dollar. The roof-ceiling system, called a "folded plate", is made of 2x8-inch rafters and carefully nailed sheets of 3/8-inch plywood, instead of the posts and beams used on most roofs. It's so sturdy that the only supports required for the 260foot span are posts at each corner of the room.

The fireplace column emphasizes the ceiling's height and partially screens the dining-sturdy area behind. Beyond are the family-dining room and kitchen. The unusual sculptured entry treatment further points up the cathedral ceiling.

The architect designed this area to act as an instant extension of the living room for parties, cozy chats or that night you have the boss and his wife for dinner. The table can be used for letter writing or household bookkeeping.

Here the table is set for a semiformal occasion, like a bridge lunchroom. For a alrger group, you could pull the table away from the fireplace wall. The smaller chairs were borrowed from the family-dining room. They're handsome, but rugged enough for everyday use.

With lots of floor space and two uncluttered walls, living room furniture arrangement is flexible. There is a bookcase unit on the front wall, just right of the door to the bedroom hall. The conversation area has plenty os seating, but it's compact enough for intimate groups.

This is a one-woman kitchen, but it's not tight because through traffic by-passes the work center. There's coutner and storage space handy to both the sink and range. And no matter where you stand, the ceiling light grid assures that you won't cast a shadow.

Counter between kitchen and family area is three feet wide, so it's efficient for preparing and serving meals, as well as cleaning up afterwards. Dishawsher underneath has a custom panel that can be painted any color. Cabinet space is abundant and most of it can be used for dishes and utensils because four roll-out compact "pantries" left of the refrigerator will hold most of your groceries.

When company's not here, the room functions efficiently for day-to-day family living.  Soft lighting illuminates the serving counter and message center, which is easily reached from either side. The seating group on the right would be handy for watching television.

In planning the master bedroom, we consider how best to use every bit of its 15x16-foot floor space. (The window wall makes it seem even larger.). The king-size bed can placed so that it's accessible from both sides, yet doesn't block traffic to the door, dressing room or other furniture. Tere's even a place for an easy-chair reading center! The patio outside could be screened for ultraprivate sun bathing.

Here's a two-in-one bedroom that's just the place for a pair of siblings, especially if they're different ages. Each end is actually an individual room with its own entrance and large closet. But instead of a solid wall between them, there's an accordion  divider that can be drawn for private study or sleep. When the gand comes in, open it wide - and take a load off otherr areas. Attractive, durable parquet flooring is prefinished hardwood.

Downstairs is the laundry area with a sewing center in a corner.
