A 1967 home with an unusual living-dining

This is a cluster house, it has two aprts -  a living "pod" and a sleeping "pod" - connected by a glass, multipurpose area.

This home fits especially well into a woodsy setting because it can provide plenty of outdoor living. Here decks jut off the living room; big patios nestle between the wings; and the bedrooms open onto long decks. The opposite side, front and rear have more outdoor areas.

Couple the U-shaped "pods" side-by-side, on different levels, even corner-to-corner - they'll fit almost any lot. The bedrooms are entirely insulated from the noise-producing areas, a boon to large families and light sleepers. Also, notice that no two bedrooms share a wall.  The living unit measures 24x40 feet; the sleeping unit is 32x46 feet. Total floor space is 2.224 square feet, not counting the decks.

Because they're so sheltered, the patios on either side of the connecting link serve as outdoor family rooms. And the link is an informal dining area that has many other uses; it would make a superb greenhouse, solarium, playroom or studio.

The living is quiet even if the house is mainly open. Through traffic passes it by, while bedrooms aren't any closer than next door.

A storage core with a china cupboard and entry closet separates the formal dining area from the living room. That's the only partition here, but notice how different ceiling and wall treatments in the connecting link, entry, living and dining rooms set these areas apart even more.
