An unusual 1951 home with a spectacular fireplace. Plans provided!
This house was created by architects Levitt&Sons on Long Island. The house is simple and compact. While i do like the plans, the exterior colors i have to say ar not quite my taste.
Glass wall at rear of living room slides open on rollers so the entire room can become an extension of the garden in the summer. Weather tripping keeps wall windtight in the winter. Fireplace open on three sides is a brick peninsula that turns this end of the living room into a reading corner. Atop the brick wall behind the fireplace are two shelves, one accessible only from kitchen , the other serving as a convenient bookshelf.
Draperies lung from ceiling track serve several purposes. They control light from the front window, the can shut off kitchen from dining space and they can create a small entrance hall while shutting off drafts from entrance door.
Kitchen shelves are made of 2x10s dressed down, are backed with sliding doors of fluted glass. Unit with tray on top of it is the heating plant for the house. Above closed ceiling grill is one of two attic fans for summer cooling.
Strip windows in berooms free walls for furniture. Closet doors are sliding wood slats. Magnets on handles keep dorrs from standing open.
Private room, here furnished as a study, can be closed off from living room by a lightweight sliding door made os 1.2s, and faced with wallboard to match living room walls in texture and color.
